The WV Adult Education programs build skills for success by providing adults with the opportunity to acquire and improve functional skills necessary to enhance the quality of their lives as workers, family members, and citizens. These programs play an important role in fostering productive employment, effective citizenship, personal and family growth, self-esteem, and dignity for adult learners.

Adult Education at WVAdultEd

What is Adult Education?

WVAdultEd provides free educational programs to help adults gain the skills needed for success in the workplace, at home, and in the community. Our programs support:

  • Career advancement with strong foundational skills
  • GED® and High School Equivalency preparation
  • English language learning
  • Workforce certifications and soft skills training

Who Can Enroll?

To qualify, individuals must:
Be at least 17 years old and not enrolled in high school
Meet one of the following criteria:

  • Need to improve basic skills
  • Do not have a high school diploma or equivalent
  • Be an English language learner

All programs are completely free, with certified instructors providing personalized instruction.

Preparing for the High School Equivalency Exam

Steps to Earning Your HSE (GED®):

  1. Find a Local Class – Contact an instructor to create your personalized learning plan.
  2. Study & Prepare – Choose in-person, virtual, or distance learning.
  3. Take the Official GED Ready® Practice Test – Assess your readiness.
  4. Register for the HSE Exam – Your instructor will guide you through the process.
  5. Take (& Pass) Your HSE Exam!

Can I Study from Home?

Yes! Our Adult Distance Education Program offers flexible, free online learning for West Virginia residents. Study anytime on your computer or mobile device with access to:

  • Edgenuity®
  • GED Academy®
  • Computer Essentials
  • Burlington English®

Note: You must visit an in-person class for initial assessment and enrollment.

Microsoft® Office Certifications

WVAdultEd offers free certification in Microsoft Office programs, including:

  • Microsoft Office Associate – Excel, Word, Outlook, or PowerPoint
  • Microsoft Office Specialist – Associate – Pass any 3 of the 4 Associate exams
  • Microsoft Office Expert – Advanced certification in Access, Word, or Excel
  • Microsoft Office Specialist – Expert – Earned by passing 2 Expert exams + Associate certification
